Gender and Young Children: Forming Identity and the Role of the Adult

Tuesday, July 26, 2022 8:00 PM - 9:30 PM ET | Online (Zoom)

Free. Suggested donation of $10.

In this interactive presentation, Dani Glass (they/them) will speak about gender development and exploration in young children, and the importance of trusting children to tell their own story when it comes to gender and all forms of identity. Children receive messages about gender from birth, and it is up to the adults in their lives to help them navigate the world of gender stereotypes and expectations. Gender is a central component of all children’s developing identity, and we know that affirming children’s identity - be it cultural, racial, linguistic, or more, is not only important work, but life-saving work. Dani will also discuss what gender inclusion and affirmation look like in an early childhood context.

Dani Glass (they/them) is an early childhood educator in Chicago, IL. Originally planning to become a high school English teacher, Dani received a BA in English and teacher certification in secondary education from Lawrence University in 2015. After discovering a love for teaching young children, Dani received a Master’s in early childhood education from Erikson Institute in 2021. Dani works in a two-year old classroom, and finds joy in watching children’s language develop and seeing the natural generosity, kindness, and curiosity that young children possess. Outside of the classroom, Dani can typically be found playing sports, reading books, or cooking for friends and family.
