Development and Communications Internship


Who We Are

Pride and Less Prejudice (PLP) is a small nonprofit organization founded in 2019 and run by a team of 10 volunteers. Our mission is to foster inclusive educational spaces for children by sending LGBTQ- inclusive books to Pre-K to 3rd grade classrooms in the U.S. and Canada.

We are looking for a Development and Communications Intern to join our small collaborative team and drive implementation of the organization’s mission. As a start-up non-profit, this is an unpaid internship. The intern will play a key role in furthering the mission of the organization while working alongside our dynamic team.

What We’ve Done

  • Donated over 7,500 books across the United States and Canada

  • Hosted quarterly workshops for educators to come together and learn how to navigate discussions on inclusivity and diversity in the classroom

  • Launched a blog and sourced new perspectives on the impacts and potential of LGBTQ-inclusive children’s literature

  • Received multiple grants from the Tegan and Sara Foundation, the New Harvest Foundation, and the Pollination Project to expand our work in the U.S. and Canada

Who You Are

A college student who is interested in LGBTQ+ advocacy, nonprofit management, and/or socially-conscious children’s literature.

The intern hired for this position will need to have a passion for LGBTQ+ issues and ideally have an interest in youth outreach. This person will be working directly with the Founder, Development Coordinator, and other team members on social media, development research, and administrative tasks. They will also be included in discussions regarding the direction and activities of the organization.

Responsibilities

Social Media

  • Post weekly on LinkedIn and create a calendar of posts, which will repurpose content from our other profiles

  • Research articles that we can feature on our social media

  • Write blog posts about our workshop(s) and other events

  • Communicate with potential blog contributors

Development

  • Research corporations for possible grants or sponsorship

  • Write/proofread parts of grant applications (with assistance from Founder, Development Coordinator, and others)

  • Track grant applications currently in progress

  • Support the fall online Banned Together Fundraiser

Administration

  • Reach out to teachers for testimonials to support communications and development

  • Perform data entry for workshops, book requests, and online auction

  • Support the founder in creating and writing emails using MailChimp

Requirements

  • Meticulous attention to detail and strong organizational skills

  • Strong research and writing skills

  • Ability to juggle multiple projects

  • Strong interpersonal and collaborative skills

  • Passion for PLP’s mission

Time Commitment

  • Flexible, remote

  • 10 hours/week
