Reflections on Reading “Pink, Blue, and You”

By Erin Jacobs

February 26, 2024

A 2nd grade teacher once overheard a student in her classroom say to another student, “A girl can’t have a girlfriend!”

In that moment, she stepped in and simply said, “That is actually not true. A girl can have a girlfriend, and a boy can have a boyfriend.”

Teachers can be tremendous allies both in their roles as educators and as affirming adults in the lives of children. Creating classroom environments where everyone feels safe and valued is a necessary first step in helping every student feel seen, regardless of gender identity and sexual orientation.

Teachers have an important opportunity not only to support students, but also to work with their school administrations to create inclusive communities for all families.

1 in 10 kids is LGBTQ

In an average classroom of 20, there are likely at least two kids who are trying to figure out their gender identity or sexual orientation. Books like the ones we provide will support them on their journeys.

What We Offer

LGBTQ-Inclusive Books

  • Every school year, we select ~15 LGBTQ-inclusive children’s books for PreK through 3rd grade classrooms.

  • Using monetary donations from generous individuals and grants, we buy these books and send them to educators who have submitted a book request (at no cost to the educators).

Beyond the Books

We currently offer:

Community Outreach

Our partnerships include:

  • Charis Books & More in Decatur, Georgia, USA.

  • Glad Day Bookshop in Toronto, Ontario, Canada.

  • The Lawrenceville School in Lawrenceville, New Jersey, USA.

Critical Conversations

We proudly publish:

  • Meet the Author articles to dive into why the authors wrote their books and why they are important.

  • Blog articles on a variety of educational topics.

Our Initiative Supports

Inclusivity

When children see books with LGBTQ characters and themes in their classrooms, it creates a more inclusive school culture.

Representation

When children see people like themselves in books, they get a glimpse of who they might become, and they feel validated.

Community

When classrooms show understanding that all families are unique and share many common values, beliefs, and traditions, we help create community.

Acceptance

When we foster an environment where all students know that being LGBTQ is not out of the ordinary, we create acceptance.

“I was so thrilled to receive a donation from PLP to read with my preschool students. I am so happy to teach children about being inclusive and having LGBT people as part of our culture’s fabric from a young age. In this way, we are not really just teaching, we are exposing them to another normal part of life.”
